HISTORIC CASA PEREA
Set on a beautifully landscaped acre in the heart of Corrales, New Mexico, the historic Casa Perea is a stately adobe newly refurbished and available as a venue for celebrations and art events. The State Register of Cultural Properties describes it as an “excellently preserved example of New Mexico Territorial Architecture. “ Shortly after 1850, the Perea family, prominent landowners and vintners, began building their home with adobe bricks and terrones, blocks of sod cut from the banks of the nearby Rio Grande. Casa Perea’s central sala, with a 62 foot long wooden dance floor, made the home a popular spot for social gatherings and dances. Following New Mexico’s statehood in 1912, the Casa served for a time as the Sandoval County Courthouse.
Today, the fully restored building retains its original character, with nine rooms of whitewashed walls and exposed vigas, wooden beams, eight fireplaces, and mullioned windows throughout. Modern amenities include a spacious kitchen, three full bathrooms, handicapped access, three sizeable brick patios, and ample designated parking. At the entrance from Corrales Road, a small vineyard and zaguán, a traditional wooden gateway, lead to a hundred foot long pergola supporting wisteria, climbing roses, and trumpet flower vines. Beyond is a lush garden of fruit trees, flowers, aromatic herbs, and lawns with a burbling fountain at the Casa’s front entrance.
